Smoked Alaska Seafoods issues recall of Smoked Silver Salmon cans

Wasilla-based Smoked Alaska Seafoods, Inc. has issued a

for all 6.5 ounce jars and cans of Smoked Silver Salmon due to the possibility of a potentially life-threatening bacterial contamination.

Containers with the production code

on the bottom of the jar may be contaminated or may become contaminated with

, which can lead to botulism — a rare but potentially deadly bacterial infection.

According to the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation's Food Safety and Sanitation Program, clostridium botulinum can cause life-threatening illness or even death.

DEC says the product was distributed throughout the state, mainly to gift shops in and around Anchorage and Fairbanks.

So far, no cases of illness related to the product have yet been reported.

The department is cautioning people against using the product with the production code, even if the contents don't appear or smell spoiled.
