Smoky but still quite nice today

While under partly sunny skies Friday Anchorage warms into the mid-60s.

The low southeast of Kodiak will continue to push east across the Gulf of Alaska last night and today (Friday). Most of the precipitation will remain over the Gulf of Alaska with the possibility of some moisture from Cordova to portions of the Prince William Sound area where we can see some lift in this area where multiple fronts are intertwined. The Middleton Island radar is showing showers over the water that should continue today (Friday). Anchorage will be shadowed by the mountains for this event.

A stray shower may make it over the Kenai Mountains to the Western Kenai, but most areas will remain dry. A trough of low pressure continues to drop down from the Arctic and will move south of both the Brooks and the Alaska Ranges. Cold air over warm air is inherently unstable and showers are expected to develop. Airflow should be moving out of the north for this forecast period. Our current air mass has been very dry, so some areas may see measurable rain while other areas see rain evaporate before reaching the ground as storms drop down from out of the north.

Partly sunny in Anchorage Friday while we warm up to 67 degrees with areas of smoke. Mostly cloudy and then partly cloudy after Midnight with areas of smoke.

Partly cloudy on Saturday while we see a high of 65 degrees with areas of smoke. Saturday night clear skies with areas of smoke while we cool down to 47 degrees.

Looking ahead, Anchorage will be partly sunny on Sunday with a high of 66 degrees.

Smoke continues to move into and sit over our mountains in Anchorage while obscuring views as well as deteriorating our air quality. Fire Weather for the Susitna Valley: Light winds out of the north are generally expected through this morning (Friday). Flow out of the north will increase and become gusty from Talkeetna North and over the western Susitna Valley late Friday and into Saturday with the passage of a low-pressure trough. Winds in these areas will slacken again Saturday afternoon. Upper wind support and warm or cold air moving into the area are lacking, so we are not expected to see a repeat of last week's wind event.

Precipitation will be lacking, but a trough of low pressure on Friday and Saturday will bring a few showers with low probabilities of wetting rains. There is an outside chance of a thunderstorm or two along the Talkeetna Mountains Friday afternoon, but stability indices and lack of moisture would keep probabilities low.

Kenai Peninsula Fire Weather: Winds from the northwest will be light today (Friday) over the Swan Lake fire area, but gusty outflow winds are expected over the southern and eastern Kenai Peninsula. Troughs of low pressure dropping down from the north on Friday and Saturday will likely favor showers over the Kenai Mountains east of the fire area with little chance of wetting rains to the fire area.
