You would be surprised at how fast it can go from a sunny day and blue sky to thunderstorms developing and that is expected to be the case Tuesday evening in and around the Anchorage area.

The National Weather Service issued a Special Weather Statement saying the atmospheric conditions are ripe for another round of thunderstorms. These storms would develop in the higher elevations and push across the Matanuska Valley to the Chugach range. Thunderstorms may contain frequent lightning, small hail, gusty winds and heavy rain. And with that rain, street and urban flooding is possible.

The prime time for these storms to start building is after 3 p.m., and going through 9 p.m. Up to a half inch of rain could fall with the slow-moving storms. Motorists should be careful, watch for ponding on roads and parking lots, and beware of hydroplaning.

Always remember to be safe, and respect the power of a thunderstorm.

As the saying goes: "When thunder roars, go indoors".
