HELENA — Friday evening at Capital High School, a group of students launched an event called “Girls Supporting Girls”.

“GSG” is a community and student orchestrated event with the sole intention of inspiring and supporting high school girls within the Helena Valley.

The acronym, G.I.R.L.S stands for: Goals, Identity, Leadership, and Self-confidence.

During the event, a few keynote speakers, like Helena’s own Mo Shea, this year’s Miss Montana, and her Psychologist mother, Kathy Kinsella Shea, spoke to the girls about their own personal experiences as women, from one spectrum to the other.

Miss Montana discussed the struggles of her own femininity, loving to wear heels and dress-up, but also having a knack for hard sciences, and pursuing a career in medicine as a physician.

Women of all ages spoke about their own challenges entering high school, going through it and entering the work force and defining stereotypes and embracing who you truly are, regardless of whatever “box” people will try to stuff you in.

Capital High Juniors, Zoe Brown and Mariah Mercer are the executive creators of the group.

Brown told MTN, “Teenagers are really trying in our generation to do good in the world, and I think that we really wanted to show Helena, what Capital and Helena High can do to the community....”

GSG hopes to make this an annual summer event for girls entering eighth grade through senior year.
