Police identify man killed in SE Wichita shooting

Wichita police have identified a man shot and killed Friday morning as 40-year-old Charles Cunningham.

Around 4 a.m., officers responded to a shooting in the 4400 block of east Bayley. There, they located shell casings and two handguns.

A short time later, Cunningham arrived at a local hospital with a gunshot wound where he died.

Through their investigation, police learned Cunningham and his 42-year-old brother went to a home in reference to an ongoing dispute over. they say, Cunningham physically attacked 26-year-old Dalton Patterson, and Patterson shot Cunningham.

Officers arrested Patterson on a charge of possession of methamphetamine with the intent to sell, stemming from a Friday morning shooting.

Police say this was not a random incident. They say everyone involved knew each other. Investigators recovered multiple guns and drugs during their investigation.

The investigation is ongoing, and it will be presented to the Sedgwick County District Attorney’s Office.

4:41 p.m.

Wichita police say a shots fired call they worked Friday afternoon is not connected to a shooting that left one man dead this morning.

Around 12:25 p.m., officers were conducting follow-up at a residence in the 4400 block of East Boston, stemming from an earlier shooting on East Bayley, when they saw a man shoot a shotgun into the air.

No one was hurt and there was no damage.

The officers quickly arrested 22-year-old Antonio Johnson on charges of criminal discharge of a firearm, felon in possession of a firearm and an outstanding warrant. No other shots were fired.

5:51 p.m.

A 40-year-old man is dead after a shooting early Friday morning in southeast Wichita.

Officers responded around 4 a.m. for a report of shots fired on east Bayley near Oliver and Lincoln.

When officers got on scene, they found shell casings in the parking lot. They also learned the victim had been taken to the hospital by a private vehicle.

Police say the man died at the hospital from a single gunshot wound to the chest.

Through the investigation, investigators learned that the victim and a 42-year-old man got into a fight. A shot was fired and the victim was struck.

Investigators say this was not a random incident. Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call Crime Stoppers.
