AUSTIN (KXAN) — Several adults and children were injured in a boat crash at Calcasieu Point near Lake Travis Wednesday night.

Austin-Travis County EMS and Pedernales Fire Department responded to the scene of the crash at the 2100 block of Cypress Club Pointe around 9:30 p.m.

ATCEMS tweeted that 12 people were involved in the crash altogether.

They said six patients were transported to Austin-area hospitals. A child and a woman in her 20s, both with serious, but not expected to be life-threatening injuries were transported by STAR Flight and the rest were taken by ambulance, according to ATCEMS.

Texas Parks and Wildlife is now investigating the crash. They told KXAN alcohol didn’t play a role, but the driver of the boat was confused about where they were.

Our video showed investigators relying on their flashlights to look around the crash site.

Dangers of boating at night

TPWD said nighttime boating is allowed on Lake Travis, but you need to have your lights on. Those are red and green lights on the side of your boat and a stern light.

Investigators have not said yet if the boat that ran aground had its lights on.

They also said you must pay extra attention to your surroundings.

Brian Gardner with South Austin Marine said he’s out on Lake Travis almost every day.

Even for people like Gardner who know the lake well, Gardner said he’s always extra cautious when it’s dark out.

“I live by a couple simple rules at night, and it’s kind of silly, but if you don’t know, don’t go,” he said. “So if you can’t see what’s in front of you, you need to slow down your boat or stop your boat and figure out what’s in front of you.”

He also said even at night, you can see the reflection on the water.

“At night, you just want to look for that reflection on the water. If you don’t see the reflection, there’s probably a boat there,” he said. “So it doesn’t matter who you are. It gets dark out here at night. You need to know where you’re going.”
