SAN MARCOS, Texas (KXAN) — It’s been a tough week for Texas State University. Earlier in the week, there was a report of an armed robbery on campus at the university. No one was hurt, however, and police are still looking for the suspect.

Then, a Texas State University student, Aaron Jackson Peterman, 20, was killed in an apartment about one mile from campus. While the two incidents are unrelated, it’s quite a bit to deal with for the new Chief of Police for the Texas State University Police Department.

It’s been two weeks since Chief Laurie Clouse started her new job as Chief of Police at one of the fastest growing universities in Texas with just over 38,000 students enrolled.

Clouse says she’s met with as many department heads as she can in her first two weeks and she says she has some big plans for her the department. “We’ve got a 90-day plan and a three-year plan and a five-year plan and the end of five years we want to reach accreditation status — CLIA and IACLEA accreditation.”

She says the department was already in good shape, however, “we’ve talked about a mindset shift in the police department: more student focused and more accessible and more transparent and we are focused on more engagement and building more with our community.”

That includes relationships outside of Texas State. Clouse says she’s met with the San Marcos Police Chief and the District Attorney. “Just based on those meetings, I don’t think there are going to be any obstacles to having really good relationships with those organizations.”

In the meantime. if you know anything about the homicide and attempted armed robbery — you’re asked to call the police.
