Road crews hit the streets early Friday morning to beat the icy conditions.

Crews with both MoDOT and the city of Springfield already pretreated the roads.

Springfield's street superintendent says crews started preparing Thursday, making sure all the trucks were ready to go. The city sent out 28 trucks out across the city around rush-hour Friday. They are focusing on the primary routes like Campbell and Battlefield first. Then they will do secondary routes.

MoDot treats the main highways like I-44 and U.S. 60, along with streets that are also highways, like Glenstone and Chestnut. MoDOT sent out about 280 trucks across the 21 county district Friday morning. Both city and state crews added salt to the roads salt instead of waiting.

"This one is not really showing any kind of major amount of rain coming in prior to the wintry precipitation, so we're able to get a pretreat down," said Springfield Superintendent of Streets Ron Bailey.

Both the city of Springfield and MoDOT will have full crews out throughout the day, with another shift coming in the evening. They say they are most concerned about the evening commute.
