The leader of Preston City Council has said he is disappointed at takeaway litter being dumped on the streets of the city.

His comments were in response to pictures posted on Twitter, which appear to show discarded pizza boxes and takeaway containers outside German Doner Kebab in Preston.

The photos also show nearby bins overflowing with rubbish.

“Maybe you can ensure litter is managed better now customers are staying outside,” said Martin Catterall in a tweet to German Doner Kebab.

“Your Preston store was blighted when I past at 6am and there is still plenty there now,” he added.

Councillor Matthew Brown, Leader at Preston City Council, said it was "disappointing to hear that more takeaway litter is being left strewn across our streets".

“Ultimately it is the consumer’s responsibility to either use a litter bin, or if one is not available or full please find one that isn’t or to take their rubbish home," he said.

“Our street cleaning teams are out early mornings in the city centre dealing with debris and litter bins are emptied several times a week.

“As we move to re-opening more shops and businesses in the coming weeks, we hope our residents will take pride in our city and environment once again and help us to keep Preston tidy and litter free,” he added.

The litter has since been cleared and the bins emptied this morning (May 27), according to Preston City Council.

A spokesperson for German Doner Kebab said: “Since opening in June 2019 we have worked in partnership with the local authority to maintain the upkeep and cleanliness of the area surrounding our restaurant on Fleet Street.

“We have remained open during the Pandemic for delivery and click and collect takeaway to meet the demands of our customers and also support frontline workers and communities throughout the local area.

“The litter outside of our restaurant on the morning of Wednesday May 27th failed to meet our high standards and duty of care to the local retail environment.

“As a responsible retailer we will continue to work closely with the local authority to maintain the surrounding area whilst also ensuring that the area is kept clean and litter free during our operating hours.”
