Those travelling on Lancashire's railway routes today (May 25) should expect cancellations, delays and alterations.

Overrunning engineering works has meant that services running through Preston railway station have been suspended.

Trains may be cancelled or services may be altered, with some replacement buses in use.

Normal service isn't expected until 4pm, National Rail has said.

Disruption is expected in Preston, Blackpool, Lancaster, Colne, and Ormskirk.

Services north of the county to Barrow-in-Furness and Carlisle are also affected, as well as trains to Manchester.

Northern services between Preston and Barrow-in-Furness, Blackpool North, Colne, Leeds, and Ormskirk are affected.

Services between Leeds and Blackpool North have also been hit.

TransPennine Express services between Preston, Lancaster, and Carlisle are currently suspended.

There is also an amended service between Manchester, Wigan North Western and Preston.

A National Rail spokesperson said: "Overrunning engineering work at Preston means that train service has been suspended at the station.

"As a result of this, there will be further changes to the scheduled service today.

"Trains may be cancelled or revised, and journeys on some routes may be replaced by buses.

"Please see the customer advice section for further details.

"We anticipate that disruption will continue until 16:00."

The following alterations to Northern services have been made:

  • Trains between Preston and Ormskirk will be replaced by road transport.
  • Trains from Leeds to Preston will terminate at Blackburn where customers should change for road transport from Blackburn to Preston.
  • Trains from Preston to Leeds will be replaced by road transport from Preston to Blackburn, customers should change at Blackburn for a train onwards to Leeds.
  • Trains from Preston to Colne will be replaced by road transport from Preston to Blackburn, customers should change at Blackburn for a train onwards to Colne.
  • Trains from Colne to Preston will terminate at Blackburn, where customers should change for road transport from Blackburn to Preston.
  • Trains from Preston to Barrow will be replaced by road transport from Preston to Lancaster.
  • Trains from Barrow to Preston will terminate at Lancaster where customers should change for road transport to Preston.
  • Trains from Preston to Blackpool South / Blackpool North will be replaced by road transport between Preston and Kirkham and Wesham.

Northern customers tickets will also be valid on Avanti West Coast and TransPennine Express services as well as Blackpool Transport local bus services.
