Preston North End and Blackburn Rovers are currently attempting to escape it, Burnley have not been it since 2016 and Blackpool would love to get back there - but where do the four Lancashire clubs rank in the all-time Championship table?

Well the performance of clubs in the second tier of English football over the past 128 years has been revealed.

An all-time Championship table was compiled by worldfootball.net, ranking the teams who have played in the second tier from when it was known as Division Two from 1892-1992, the First Division from 1992-2004 and the Championship as it is currently known.

It's Barnsley who come out at the top of the pile having played 3,188 games at the level in their history and amassing 4,023 points.

Preston top the Lancashire mini-league, and sit 12th overall, with 2,834 points from 1,997 games.

That's enough to put them just ahead of Blackpool who are 14th with 2,745 points from 2016 matches.

The Clarets come next, 15th overall, with a tally of 2,712 from 1,910 fixtures and Rovers are hot on their heels in 17th with 2,677 points from 1,851 encounters.

The table ranks clubs simply on points gained and not points per game with some of those teams with fewer games played having spent more time in the top tier of English football.

If we were to apply a points per game equation then Rovers would climb to seventh with an average of 1.45 putting them ahead of their Lancashire rivals.

Burnley and PNE would have an identical 1.42 average while Blackpool would be 1.36.
