Urban Meyer doubts ‘This is Michigan’s year,’ picks Ohio State for playoff

On the first FOX College Football studio show of the season on Saturday, former Ohio State Buckeyes head football coach Urban Meyer threw a not so subtle slice of shade at his former (and probably still current) rivals up at The Team Up North.

When discussing the Big Ten, host Rob Stone asked Meyer, “Is this finally Michigan’s year?”

To which the legendary Buckeye coach immediately responded, “Year for what?”

The quip drew laughs from the other analysts on the panel, Brady Quinn, Reggie Bush, and Matt Leinart, but Meyer seemed to mean the question, at least somewhat seriously.

While Meyer quickly recovered and backed his question up with praise for the team’s players and coaches, he said that with the new offensive coordinator Josh Gattis transitioning the team from Jim Harbaugh’s traditional ground-and-pound offense to a more spread set, there will be a learning curve.

Meyer, continued to professionally rub salt in the Wolverines’ wounds by noting that as great as defensive coordinator Don Brown is, the last two games of the 2018 season didn’t go too well (including Meyers’ Buckeyes beating their rivals 62-39 in The Game) for his “vaunted” unit.

Despite his professional analysis, Meyer let his Buckeye bias show just a bit, which I — for one — am absolutely here for.

After Meyer finished his explanation, Leinart “translated” for the coach, confirming that no, Urban doesn’t think that it is “Michigan’s year.”

At the end of the first episode, the panel revealed their College Football Playoff predictions. As it should be, Meyer selected the Buckeyes to make the final four, but had the Clemson Tigers winning the title. Quinn — a Central Ohio native and brother-in-law to OSU legend A.J. Hawk — was the only other panelist to pick the Scarlet and Gray to make the playoff.
