LANSING — All state government offices in the Lower Peninsula closed Monday at 10 a.m. due to major snow and bitter temperatures.

Gov. Gretchen Whitmer sent home all nonessential state employees to allow emergency crews to clear the roads. Certain offices will remain open for critical functions only.

The Michigan House of Representatives, the Senate and the Michigan Capital are all closed Monday.

The State Emergency Operations Center will remain open to monitor storm conditions.

"This is about keeping all Michiganders safe,” Whitmer said. “If you must be out, please drive safely in these dangerous weather conditions and be respectful of road crews working to clear snow and ice.”

Schools, cities and counties around the Lansing area also closed Monday.

Lansing Mayor Andy Schor announced Monday morning that all non-essential city functions are suspended due to the extreme weather. All city sponsored events and meetings are canceled.

“Safety is always our number one priority,” Schor said. “We urge residents to stay off the roads, assist neighbors in need, and take extra precautions to stay safe.”
