EAST LANSING — Compliance problems delayed move-in for part of the day on Wednesday at the new Hub on Campus apartment building in downtown East Lansing.

Tenants had been scheduled to move in beginning Wednesday morning, however, by that time, the building still had not passed a final safety inspection which was necessary to secure a temporary certificate of occupancy. That certificate is required before the city allows tenants to move into a new building.

The building received its temporary certificate of occupancy at approximately 3 p.m., which allowed tenants to move in Wednesday afternoon.

"We’re very appreciative of city staff for their thorough and professional inspection," Jason Sherman, a spokesman for Core Spaces, the Chicago-based company that developed the complex, said Wednesday afternoon. "Minor issues were identified during the last inspection and we believe we have satisfied all open issues that were noted."

City Manager George Lahanas said the delay in certifying the building stemmed from a "wealth of small issues," such as the property's need to clean up construction debris.

City officials performed multiple inspections at the Hub earlier this month to check for issues including fire safety, Lahanas said.

"We're thankful for the patience of our residents and their families and will have extra staff on hand to help expedite move-in," Sherman said.

The Hub apartments are 91% leased, according to Core Spaces. Monthly rent for a studio apartment starts at $1,119.

Managers at the Hub had planned for staggered move-in dates between Aug. 21 and the first day of classes at nearby Michigan State University Aug. 28.

"There was a delay in terms of this one day," Lahanas said. "But we're pleased on the customers' behalf that they were able to open on the day they had planned."

Another new downtown complex, the Landmark apartments, began move-in earlier this month. The 12-story, 243-unit Landmark building, located above a newly-constructed Target store, passed city inspections and received its temporary certificate of occupancy.

The Landmark apartments are located just west of the Hub apartments on Grand River Avenue.

No road closures are planned to accommodate move-in days at the Landmark or Hub apartments.
