LANSING — Three brothers were killed and four other family members were injured in a house fire early Wednesday morning in Lansing, officials said.

The Lansing Fire Department was called just after 1:30 a.m. to the 2000 block of New York Avenue near Lake Lansing Road.

Juan Zavala, 8, Ramiro Zavala, 5, and Manolo Zavala, 3, were killed in the fire, Sparrow Forensic Pathology Services confirmed. Lansing Schools acting Superintendent Mark Coscarella said in a statement that "two Gier Park students and their 3-year-old sibling" had died in the fire.

Manolo Zavala, 3, Ramiro Zavala, 5, and Juan Zavala, 8, were killed in a house fire Oct. 30, 2019, in the 2000 block of New York Avenue in northern Lansing.

A 5-year-old and a 31-year-old man were taken to the University of Michigan Burn Center, Assistant Fire Chief Michael Tobin said in a news release. The child is in critical condition.

A 26-year-old woman and an 18-month-old child are in stable condition at Sparrow Hospital.

Firefighters arrived to see heavy flames on the first and second floors of the house, Tobin said in the news release. Injured family members were outside reporting that three children were still inside the home.

Coscarella's statement also said one of the children injured in the blaze is a kindergarten student at Gier Park.

"We are all devastated about the loss of these wonderful young children and our thoughts and prayers are with the family members recovering in the hospital at this time," Coscarella said in an email.

The family's dog also died in the fire, which fire remains under investigation, Tobin said.

Online records show the house is registered as a rental property with the city and was in compliance with building codes. It was last inspected in February, just before the most recent rental certificate was issued, the records indicate. A city official confirmed the records are accurate.
