LANSING — A 17-year-old who shot and killed another teenager pulled the trigger accidentally, police said.

Adam Barnett, 18, died of a gunshot wound Oct. 20 after Anthony Gonzales, 17, "inadvertently, accidentally, by his own admission" pulled the trigger, Lansing Police Department Det. Martha McGonegal testified during a hearing that led to criminal charges.

Gonzales picked up a hunting rifle that was on top of a kitchen table as he, Barnett and two other boys stood around it, McGonegal said. He told police he leveled the barrel, pointing the gun at Barnett, and accidentally pulled the trigger.

Lansing police were called just after 11 a.m. to the 100 block of West Fairfield Avenue. Barnett was taken to a local hospital and died later that day.

Gonzales was charged with careless discharging of a weapon causing death or injury.

He was released from court on a personal recognizance bond of $5,000. He was not booked into jail and a mugshot is not available.
