LANSING — Five new cases of the coronavirus were reported in Ingham County on Monday, bringing the total cases in the Lansing region to 1,017.

Ingham remains mid-Michigan county hardest hit by the coronavirus, with 701 cases reported since the virus was identified in Michigan in mid-March. There are 178 cases in Eaton County and 138 cases in Clinton County as of Monday, Memorial Day.

No COVID-19 deaths were reported Monday in any of the three mid-Michigan counties.

Statewide, 12 people died from COVID-19 and 202 new cases were identified. That brings the state's total to 54,881 cases and 5,240 deaths, state figures show.

About 100,000 Americans have been killed by the coronavirus so far.

The coronavirus is highly contagious and potentially deadly. It spreads through close personal contact and contact with infected surfaces. Symptoms can include coughing, fever and shortness of breath.

To limit the spread of the coronavirus, health experts recommend thorough hand-washing, wearing masks, practicing social distancing and staying home if you are sick or were in contact with a sick person.

Michigan residents must wear masks or face coverings in enclosed public spaces, according to an executive order signed by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer.
