Three people were injured, two seriously, in a crash involving three vehicles Thursday evening on North East Street in Lansing.

LANSING - Two people were critically injured in a three-vehicle crash that closed a major thoroughfare in north Lansing on Thursday evening.

The crash happened about 5:20 p.m. at the intersection of North East and Bates streets.

North East Street, a continuation of Larch Street, was completely closed between Chilson Avenue and Harris Street. The road was expected to remain closed well into Thursday night while accident investigators did their work, police said.

The crash involved a full-size pickup truck, a sport-utility vehicle and a compact SUV and sent three people to the hospital, Lansing police Sgt. Jeromy Churchill said.

The driver of the pickup suffered minor injuries, but the other two drivers suffered injuries that could be life-threatening, he said.

Investigators were still trying to determine how the crash happened, Churchill said.

All three vehicles sustained heavy front-end damage. The compact SUV came to rest in the southbound lanes. The other two vehicles came to rest on the east side of the roadway.
