Live in Lansing or East Lansing? You don't need to shovel sidewalks yet

LANSING – As temperatures start plummeting, officials are delaying enforcement of local rules requiring people to clear snow and ice from sidewalks.

Normally, property owners in Lansing would be required to clear sidewalks within 24 hours of the end of a snowfall. East Lansing property owners normally would be required to clear snow either the same day or the following day, depending on when snow falls, and clear or treat ice within 12 hours.

But with bitter cold set to threaten frostbite within 15 minutes as temperatures continue to drop, both cities are holding off on enforcing those rules.

Lansing officials announced Monday night they would delay enforcement until the wind-chill returns above zero degrees later this week.

East Lansing officials announced Tuesday that they would suspend enforcement until 8 p.m. Friday.

"This will allow additional time for property owners to clear the sidewalks adjacent to their property as temperatures warm up later in the week," a release from East Lansing said.

Officials encouraged owners to clear sidewalks earlier if the temperature allows.
