SAGINAW - A fire that killed a Lansing man in Saginaw on Monday was intentionally set, investigators said.

Firefighters responded to the fire in the 1800 block of West Holmes Road just after 4 a.m., according to a news release from the Lansing Fire Department.

Gregory Cross, 37, was visiting at his uncle's home on Bancroft Street when the blaze broke out shortly after 2 a.m., Michigan State Police said.

The homeowner, his two grandchildren – ages 17 and 11 – and his 9-month-old great grandchild were able to escape the fire. But Cross, who had limited mobility because of a prior stroke, was found dead inside the structure, Michigan State Police Lt. Jim Lang said.

A vehicle parked on the property also burned at the same time in what appears to be a separate fire, Lang said.

MSP fire investigators determined the house fire was intentionally set, he said.

Lang said he did not know where the fire started or whether investigators have any suspects. Anyone with information about the arson is asked to call CrimeStoppers at 888-44ARSON.

Cross was visiting the home for the holiday weekend, Lang said. An autopsy was set for Tuesday, he said.
