Fireworks explode over the Capitol and the lit Christmas tree during Silver Bells in the City on Friday, November 17, 2017, in downtown Lansing.

Fourth of July falls on a Thursday this year, which means firework shows and community events will take place throughout the week and weekend.

Whether you are setting off your own fireworks or plan to attend a community fireworks show, here's what you need to know:

Keep your pets safe during firework shows

Each year, animal shelters see a surge in lost animals around the Fourth of July. Many pets are terrified of fireworks and escape from homes, yards or kennels due to panic.

If your pet is stressed or frightened by fireworks, keep them indoors in an interior room with no windows. Stay with your pet if possible when you hear fireworks; playing a radio to distract your pet from the noise can help. If you do need to take your dog outside, it is advised to keep them on a leash.

Remember, backyard fireworks usually start well before and last a few days after July 4. Talk to your veterinarian if your pet has severe anxiety about fireworks, as they may have additional recommendations. For more pet safety tips, visit http://ac.ingham.org/

Delays

Granger Waste Management is closing its offices, recycling center and disposal center on July 4. No waste collections or garbage trucks will run on the Fourth of July and residential waste collections will resume as normal on July 8.
