LANSING – Investigators have released the names of six Lansing police officers and a Lansing police sergeant who were placed on leave following a gunfight that left a man dead and an officer injured on Tuesday night.

First responders near the scene of a police-involved shooting Tuesday, May 26, 2020. A man was fatally shot after opening fire on police, according to Chief Daryl Green, and an officer was wounded.

Officers Matthew Danko, John Cosme, Aliya Cutler, Jake Ellis, Robert Leiter and Peter Howard are on administrative leave, Michigan State Police said in a news release.

Sgt. Kyle Schlagel also is on leave pending the outcome of the state police investigation, they said.

Jason Jesse Gallegos, 37, was shot and killed during the confrontation in the 900 block of North Walnut Street.

According to information released by Lansing police on Tuesday night, officers responded to a domestic abuse call about 8:30 p.m. and tried to negotiate with a man who reportedly had discharged a weapon inside the home.

The man, later identified as Gallegos, eventually stepped out of the house and opened fire on officers, police said. Officers returned fire, hitting Gallegos, who was later pronounced dead at the scene.

A male officer was taken to a hospital with a non-life-threatening gunshot wound to the leg. His condition on Thursday afternoon was unclear.

No one else was shot, but a woman who was inside the home was taken to a hospital for undisclosed reasons.

State police often handle investigations when local police departments use deadly force.

As of Thursday afternoon, state police had released a brief narrative of the incident and the names of the officers involved and the man who died.

They had released no details about the confrontation, including how many officers fired their weapons or how many shots they fired. It also was unclear what type of weapon or weapons Gallegos might have used, how many shots he fired and when he fired them.

Lt. Brian Oleksyk, spokesman for MSP's First District, declined to answer those questions on Thursday afternoon, saying the investigation is ongoing.

"We're going to do a very thorough investigation," he said.
