The Nevada Department of Transportation said hazardous road conditions closed the southbound lanes of Interstate 15 at Primm Thursday night. Authorities say snow and ice on the southern California side affected the roads causing them to be closed for a couple of hours.

On Thursday night, Nevada Highway Patrol tweeted around 10:15 p.m. that troopers were investigating an injury crash involving semi trucks just south of Primm but this time it was in the northbound lanes.

Drivers should expect delays and avoid the area.

NHP also said weather near the Nipton Road Pass was creating hazardous road conditions as well.

Drivers on Interstate 15 dealt with on and off closures all day because of the weather. Early Thursday evening, Reporter Shakala Alvaranga was live at I-15 and Primm: She experiecned the wintery, blustering weather first hand. Watch the video below.

8 News NOW Meteorologist Tedd Florendo has been warning valley residents about the potential for ice to form on the roadways all day.

“With below-freezing temps through most of the valley, along with melted snow and showers/snow this afternoon, the concern now would be ice forming,” Florendo said.

Florendo also said he and his fellow meteorologist didn’t think there would be widespread ice all over the valley, but that the problem spots would really be those areas impacted by a lot of snow and colder temperatures. Specifically, the west and south edges of town which are expected to not only be colder but also any leftover snow will make it even colder.

An advisory was not issued, but late Thursday night into Friday morning, areas of ice will form over some valley roads, especially on bridges, overpasses, and ramps which typically stay icy even after it melts everywhere else.

When asked about the snowy weather’s life span in the valley, Florendo said, “the storm continues to push out of the region at this hour, and it looks like most of our snow and rain chances will continue to diminish overnight.”
