The rash of shootings in North Las Vegas over the last few weeks has a lot of people in the city on edge. Residents 8 News NOW spoke with said they believe gang activity is the reason these young people are losing their lives.

On Wednesday, a 16-year-old died from injuries after he was shot at W. Centennial Parkway and W. Goldfield Street.  A memorial continues to grow for Lamadre Harris in the business complex.

“I want him to be remembered as smart, funny, intelligent,” said Ja’Wuan Richardson, a friend of the victim.

The Clark County Coroner hasn’t released his identity, but lose friends of Lamadre Harris say he was the teen shot and killed near Centennial and Goldfield Tuesday afternoon.

North Las Vegas residents say they’re worried the latest incident may be another gang-related incident. But, police people who knew the victim feel differently.

“It didn’t have anything to do with gang relation of anything like that,” Ja’Wuan said.

The Clark County Coroner hasn’t released his identity, but lose friends of Lamadre Harris say he was the teen shot and killed near Centennial and Goldfield Tuesday afternoon.

Lamadre’s friend addressed rumors surrounding details about what led up to the shooting.

“I guess they had beef with each other,” Ja’Wuan said.  “The guy didn’t like him, but he didn’t know that. How was he supposed to know that?”

Despite Ja’Wuan’s claims that the shooting wasn’t gang-related, parents of students who attend Legacy High School still have concerns.

“I think that gang violence is very heavy in the area, but I’m not sure what gang it could be, but I just know that it’s crazy that young people left and right, are losing their life over something so crazy like what set someone is from,” said Leathia Anderson, a senior at Legacy High School.

“Obviously that’s exactly what it is, and the gang activity from what I’ve heard at this school is pretty heavy,” said Viola Weghorst, parent.

Weghorst said she didn’t let her son walk home from school Wednesday like he usually does.

“Here in North Las Vegas we’ve had so many shootings that past couple of weeks, that you just can’t take any more chances,” Weghorst.  “I mean how many more chances do you take with your child’s safety.”

8 News NOW asked North Las Vegas Police if they believe gang activity is to blame for Tuesday’s shooting, but they say it’s too early to tell.  The agency also sent the following statement.

The issue of gangs has been a relevant concern in North Las Vegas. The North Las Vegas Police Department takes this issue seriously. These criminals affect our rights to be safe and secure in our homes, such was the case in the homicide of Angie Erives.  There are multiple task forces across the valley that the NLVPD participates in that focus on combating this issue specifically.  The NLVPD will never mention the titles or names of these gangs.  Doing so only gives credibility and praise to their criminal actions.  Unfortunately, these gang members disrupt our quality of life by conducting some of their criminal activities in our neighborhoods.  This is a community issue and should not be tolerated.  The NLVPD cannot combat this task alone.  Citizens wanting to be involved and make a difference should contact the NLVPD on how to organize a neighborhood watch program in their community.

Parents want more action to be taken.

“We send our kids, and they’re walking home, and they’re walking next to the kids that are being targetted again, then what,” Weghorst asked?  “Here we are faced with another shooting.”

North Las Vegas Police did not release a suspect description from Tuesday’s deadly shooting.

Anyone with any information is asked to call police.
