Stolen car collides with Gold Line train in Highland Park

A stolen car collided with a Gold Line train on Wednesday evening, police said.

The crash happened in the area of Figueroa Street and Avenue 56 at 5:18 p.m., according to a spokesman for the Los Angeles Police Department. No injuries were reported as of 6:30 p.m.

Police were following the stolen car but had not engaged in a pursuit when it crashed into the train, ricocheting off of it and crashing again into a building, according to Officer Tony Im, an LAPD spokesman. TV footage shows a white sedan partly lodged in a house bordering the tracks.

The driver of the stolen car was taken into custody, Im said. It was not clear from where the car had been stolen, he said.

The tracks in both directions were initially blocked, but by 6 p.m. fire crews had cleared one track and Metro was trying to restore service to it, said Rick Jager, a Metro spokesman.

Jager said commuters could expect significant delays. Buses were ferrying passengers between the Southwest Museum station in Highland Park and the South Pasadena station.
