Police have taken to social media to warn motorists of a main road near Leeds which has been completely flooded following torrential rain.

Several cars have already become stuck on Barnsdale Road, a key route in Allerton Bywater due to the flooding.

Buses are being diverted in the area and officers are asking drivers to 'not attempt to go through it'. 

The West Yorkshire Police - Leeds East team posted on social media, saying: "Just to let you all know if you are planning on going down Barnsdale Road this morning in Allerton Bywater, IT IS FLOODED.

"Several cars have already got stuck. Please go the long way around whilst the water level is this high."

PCSO Danny Bottomley, working in the area, added: "Please do not attempt to go through it. We’ve seen a number of vehicles stranded in flood water this morning."

In terms of public transport, an update from Arriva Yorkshire read: "Due to flooding on Barnsdale road from Allerton Bywater to Castleford is now un-passable. 

"The 166, 163 and 168 Services are diverting via the Great North Road and Ferrybridge."

Other parts of Yorkshire have been heavily hit by the flooding over the last 24 hours , with a number of rivers and becks bursting their banks due to the heavy rainfall.

In Otley, the park by the River Wharfe became flooded, and on-call firefighters were needed to deal with trapped vehicles in the area.
