New pictures have emerged to reveal how birds were trampled at a Leeds nature reserve following an illegal rave on bank holiday Monday.

The horrific images below were taken by community volunteers, who accessed an island in the middle of the River Aire at Kirkstall Valley Nature Reserve, Kirkstall, to assess the damage from the rave.

Around 200 people are thought to have taken part in the illegal lockdown party, which left members of the Kirkstall Valley Flytip Trolleys Litter Antisocial Behaviour team "heartbroken" and disgusted". Three people were arrested after police arrived and music equipment was also seized.

LeedsLive initially reported on damage caused at a small beach on the bank of the River Aire, where glass bottles were smashed and fires lit.

But the ravers also accessed an island by crossing the fast flowing river and caused untold damage to the protected nature reserve, leaving more than 600 laughing gas canisters, beer bottles and bags full of rubbish behind.

Scroll through the pictures to see the scene that confronted community volunteers after they were granted access to the site on Wednesday.
