Train passengers travelling between Leeds and Manchester face disruption until 10pm following a 'trespass incident' at Mirfield.

The problems began before the rush hour and have seen some Leeds United fans struggle to get to tonight's match against Swansea City after Northern Rail announced trespassers on the railway had blocked some lines.

Reports on Twitter by passengers said they were told shots had been fired at train carriages.

National Rail said the disruption was due to trespassers on the railway between Dewsbury and Huddersfield, which blocked some lines.

It says the incident has been resolved and trains are now moving through the station - but has warned Northern and Transpennine Express trains may be delayed by up to 30 minutes, cancelled or diverted and the disruption is expected to continue until approximately 10pm.

Transpennine Express passengers have been advised that tickets will be accepted on the Metrolink between Manchester Piccadilly and Manchester Victoria, and on East Midlands Trains via any 'reasonable route'.

A tweet by Tom Forth showed a crowded platform 16B at Leeds Train Station just after 4.30pm, where Transpennine Express services to Manchester and Liverpool typically depart.
