US-based online home retailer Wayfair is opening a new 1 million sq ft warehouse operation in Leicestershire this year - bringing more than 200 new jobs to the area.

The company claims to be one of the world's largest online destinations for home shopping and grossed $6.2 billion in net revenue for the 12 months to September 30 2018.

Wayfair, which has its headquarters in Boston, Massachusetts, sells home essentials such as lighting, furniture and other homeware items.

The new state-of-the-art facility at Magna Park in Lutterworth, leased from developer Gazeley, will replace its existing location in in the town as part of its rapid European expansion.

With a warehouse in London also, the new facility will serve as Wayfair's main distribution hub in the UK - creating an extra 200 new jobs locally.

Currently, the company employs over 10,000 people worldwide with 1,400 of those employees based in Europe.

The move to the new site will see the expansion of their current team in Lutterworth rise to 500 employees.

The extension in staff will see new full-time roles created including supervisory, administrative and warehouse roles.

Thomas Netzer, chief operating officer, Europe for Wayfair, said: “We are excited to expand our operations in Lutterworth as we continue to build out our logistics network to support the growth of our European business.

"The opening of our new, state-of-the-art facility in Lutterworth represents our sustained commitment to the United Kingdom as our unrivaled shopping experience continues to resonate with our customers in the region.

"We look forward to building upon this success as our new location will allow us to further scale the fast and seamless delivery of home furnishings, décor and home improvement products as we create the best possible shopping experience for home.”

The creation of the extra 200 new jobs will help to support the operation in the UK.

Wayfair's new facility is scheduled to open nearer to Autumn with hiring for the new roles beginning in Spring this year.
