It's that time of year again when schools hunt out their sacks, dust off their bean bags and sort through their hoops and relay batons – sports days are almost upon us and we can almost hear the collective groan of children across the county.

These fabulous photos from our archive showcase sports days over the decades at schools around Leicestershire.

They will surely bring back memories of fun-filled three-legged and egg and spoon races along with the more serious endeavours of wannabe athletes running, jumping and throwing their way to glory at senior school.

And for those who were not destined to be the next Usain Bolt or Mo Farrah, there was always the consolation of an afternoon sitting in the sunshine (we hope) making daisy chains...
