A new book charting the history of one of Leicester’s most famous family-run businesses and the man who founded it has proved to be something of a labour of love for Brian Johnson.
Brian worked for wholesale grocery company Roberts and Roberts Ltd for two brief spells, in the 1960s and 70s.
His long-standing keen interest in local and family history led to a decision in the 1990s to look into the history of the firm.
He said: “I decided to find out who were Messrs Roberts and Roberts and when was the company founded.
“It has taken many years to slowly piece the history together but has revealed a most interesting story of a very successful businessman, employer and family man.”
Brian traced the story back to Nottingham in 1803, when Joseph Roberts’ parents, Joseph and Elizabeth, were married.
The company name of Roberts and Roberts first appeared in the mid-1800s and became well known throughout Leicestershire and further afield.
Brian said: “With their dark green vans, with gold lettering, they delivered groceries to retailers of all sizes from small village shops to high class grocers in towns and cities.

“They also delivered catering supplies to hospitals, hotels, schools, colleges, universities, cafes, restaurants and factory canteens.”
From his first shop in Southgate Street, Leicester, Joseph was to head up a hugely successful business which resulted in further premises in the Market Place and High Street.
The book, Joseph Roberts, A Grocer of Distinction, is available, priced £8.99 (plus P&P £1.70), direct from Brian at 2 Gibson Close, Wigston Magna, LE18 1AP. Phone 0116 288 9883.
