We all have our favourite Time Lord, whether it be the older incarnations such as William Hartnell and Tom Baker, or more recent manifestations such as David Tennant and Matt Smith.

Whoever our favourite, we’re not sure many of us would have expected to bump into him (or her) at our local branch of the Co-op.

But, 45 years ago that’s exactly what happened in Glenfield.

Making a personal appearance at the Co-op superstore was none other than actor Jon Pertwee, who was just approaching the end of his four-year stint playing one of TV’s most famous and enduring characters.

These lovely photos from our archive were taken in March 1974.

They show the good Doctor greeting his fans at the store, where he also signed autographs and handed out prizes of vouchers worth £5, £3 and £2 to winners of a competition.
