This was the scene which would have greeted you if you had happened to have been walking between Hinckley Road and King Richard’s Road in Leicester in 1978.

This area of wasteland was the result of wholesale demolition that had already taken place and there was still more to come – once the economic situation had improved.

Some redevelopment work had already started, with scaffolding surrounding new buildings to the left of the photograph, seen above and below.

The newly-built King Richard III Nursery and Infant School, which opened in 1974, can also be seen right in the centre of the photo.

But the biggest casualty of demolition work in this area was still standing at this stage.

This was the imposing Emmanuel Baptist Church and schoolrooms, seen to the left of the centre of the picture.

This stood in New Park Street and was one of many buildings knocked down to make way for the creation of Narborough Road North.

The church was demolished in 1978.

The modern tower of St Peter’s Roman Catholic Church is visible to the right of centre.
