It's difficult to believe from this photo, which was taken nearly 70 years ago, but this is now a busy residential street in Leicester.

Running through Thurnby Lodge, from Scraptoft Lane to Station Road/Lane, this is Thurncourt Road in 1951.

In those days, it was known locally as Sludge Alley and it is not too difficult to see why.

It was unadopted by the council, which deemed it too expensive to repair.

It appears the photo was taken at one of its junctions at either Scraptoft Lane or Station Road/Lane, but we don’t know which one.

There is a ramshackle house on the left which looks like it was made of corrugated iron.

We found the photo in our archive after a request from reader Jeff Bentley, who now lives in Spain.

He is keen to trace any pictures of the road taken before 1955.

This was the only one in our archive.

Do any of our readers have any?
