Railway enthusiasts will be chuffed when they discover there's an online community dedicated to mapping out all of the UK's railways.

And this includes many lines that are no longer in use - and some which can no longer be seen at all.

Rail Map Online is an interactive map showing past and present UK railways, as well as ones across in both Ireland and US.

And the level of detail that the site goes into is incredible, from the busy Midland Mainline still in use today to the long lost likes of the Ivanhoe Line.

Steam heritage railways like the Great Central Railway and the Battlefield Line are featured.

And even small tourist attraction railways like the mini railway which used to run around the play areas at Twycross Zoo and the North West Leicestershire Society of Model Engineers' mini track at Hermitage Lake in Whitwick are included.

So while you may not be able to jump on a train to St Pancras from your doorstep in most parts of the county nowadays - we think you might be surprised just how many railways used to pass near to where you live.
