Raiders used explosives to take cash from an ATM inside a Nottinghamshire supermarket and police think it may be linked to other thefts across the region.

Police say a Co-operative food store in Market Place, Bingham, a town near the Leicestershire-Nottinghamshire border, was hit overnight.

A gang of masked men forced their way into the store and took money from an ATM inside.

A spokesman said: "We were called to reports that the windows to the Co-op in Market Place had been smashed at around 1.40am today (Friday 7 December).

"A vehicle had been seen outside and around five people wearing dark clothing and balaclavas got out before leaving with the cash from the machine.

"It’s believed that the offenders used an explosive to access the device and detectives are working regional colleagues to establish whether it’s linked to any other incident.

It is believed that gang of up to four men tried to open the ATM at the BP 24-hour petrol station using an angle grinder.

To combat the ongoing problem of ATM thefts, Co-op has even begun hiding tracking devices in its cash points .
