Leicestershire fire crews were scrambled to a number of fires last night.

A tree was reported alight on Knighton Park just before 8pm.

A crew from Wigston Station attended and used a hose and an axe to bring the fire under control.

The cause of the fire is not yet known.

Then around 20 minutes later a call came in to the brigade reporting a bin compound on fire in Russell Street, Loughborough.

Firefighters called to incident

Town crews were joined by Leicester's Western Station to don breathing equipment and hose down a mattress and rubbish on fire inside the smoke-filled compound.

Fire crews, who took around 40 minutes to tackle the fire fully, suspect arson was the cause.

Just as crews were leaving Russell Street, another fire in the city was reported.

A number of residents reported a shed and nearby trees had caught on fire in Lindsay Road.

The area was closed off while crews from the Southern and Central Stations tackled the blaze.

Crews wearing breathing equipment used a main pump to put out the inferno, which had seen the shed, a row of conifers and a fence catching alight.

It took just over an hour for the incident to be closed.

The fires all followed an earlier traffic incident, where a casualty suffered spinal injuries in a three-car collision in Scraptoft Lane and had to be cut free by crews.
