A man who sexually abused a young girl more than 30 years ago has been given a five-year jail sentence for his crimes.

Brian Costelow, of Haslyn Walk, in Coalville, was convicted of two counts of indecent assault following a trial at Leicester Crown Court.

Leicestershire Police said that the abuse happened between 1982 and 1985 when the young victim was aged between just five and eight.

A spokesman for the force said the sexual abuse came to light in 2017 when the woman revealed what happened to her as a child to a counsellor helping her deal with feelings of anxiety.

The matter was then reported to police and an investigation began.

The 62-year-old was sentenced at the crown court this month.

Costelow was found not guilty of three further counts of indecent assault.

Detective Constable Rachel Donaghey, the investigating officer in the case, praised the woman's bravery in coming forward and ensuring her abuser was prosecuted for the offences against her.

“Costelow made threats to his young victim, telling her he would hurt her if she told anyone about what he’d done," she said.

“But as she grew older, she realised what he had been doing wasn’t right and in 2017 reported matters to police."

Det Con Donaghey added: "She has shown great bravery in recalling the abuse she suffered at the hands of Costelow, which has helped result in his conviction.

“He is now facing a prison sentence where I hope he will take time to reflect on the severity of his crimes.”

An NSPCC spokesperson said: “Costelow probably thought he’d got away with his disgusting catalogue of abuse, but the victim’s courage in speaking out has helped bring him to justice for his crimes.

“This case is a reminder that survivors of sexual abuse will be listened to, no matter how long ago it took place.
