The number of coronavirus cases in Leicestershire has risen to almost 2,200 according to figures released by Public Health England today (May 31).

Nationwide, there are now 274,762 lab-confirmed patients and 38,489 people have passed away after testing positive for Covid-19.

This represents a rise of 1,936 and 113 respectively over the past 24 hours.

In Leicestershire, there are now 2,195 coronavirus cases - and increase of 12 over the same time period.

Of these, 896 of them are within the Leicester City Council area and the other 1,299 are in the Leicestershire County Council area.

According to the latest figures from Public Health England, released today, it represents a rise of five and seven respectively over 24 hours.

There have been no further deaths of coronavirus patients announced at Leicester's hospitals today.

Since the beginning of the pandemic, the University Hospital of Leicester NHS Trust has been giving near-daily updates of the number of patients at the Leicester Royal Infirmary, and Glenfield and General Hospitals who have passed away after testing positive for the virus.

Today the trust has confirmed no more deaths though that does not mean there have not been any - only that the processing and certification of them have not been completed.

As of yesterday, 343 patients with Covid-19 had died in Leicester hospitals.
