The number of coronavirus cases in Leicestershire has risen by 27, according to figures released by Public Health England today (May 21).

Across the UK, there are now 250,908 lab-confirmed patients and 36,042 people have passed away after testing positive for Covid-19.

This represents a rise of 2,615 and 338 in the past 24 hours.

In Leicestershire, there are now 2,047 confirmed cases of coronavirus - an increase of 27 over the same period.

Of those in Leicestershire who have tested positive, 840 of them are within the Leicester City Council area and the other 1,207 are in the Leicestershire County Council area.

According to the latest figures from Public Health England, released today, it represents a rise of four and 23 respectively over 24 hours.

Five more patients with coronavirus have died while being looked after at Leicester’s hospitals.

The deaths of the patients, aged between their 40s and their 80s, were announced today.

It means that 318 people have now died at either the Leicester Royal Infirmary, Leicester General Hospital or Glenfield Hospital.

A spokesperson for University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust (UHL), which runs the hospitals, said: "Sadly, we can confirm that 318 patients being cared for at our hospitals, and who had tested positive for Covid-19, have died.

"Five of those deaths have been announced today.

"Our thoughts and condolences are with the family and friends of the patients at this very difficult and distressing time."
