A herd of up to 20 cows are on the loose on a town housing estate.

The cattle were spotted on the Grange Park estate in Loughborough and were moving along, eating grass as they went.

Police are on the scene and are trying to contain the cows and to trace the owners.

A Leicestershire Police spokesman said: “We received a call at 8.33am from a member of the public to tell us that a lot of cows were on the street.

“We were told they were in Newstead Way and were heading for Alan Turing Way. We are making efforts to trace the owners of the cattle.

“Our advice to people is to avoid the area at the moment until the cows are off the streets.”

The presence of the cows has been reported on the Spotted Loughborough Facebook site.

Julie Kilminster posted: "Am glad I don't live there, cows are scary!"

Clive Nicol said: "These Vegans are getting out of hand with their pets."

Lisa Askew posted: "Someone wants to mooove um on."

Police contacted the owner of the cows, a local farmer, who herded the cattle back into a field.
