Department of Education statistics have identified the best performing schools in Leicestershire based on GCSE results.

The Madani Girls’ School comes top of the class in the city and county when the results are examined.

Attainment 8 is an average score across eight subjects taken at GCSE, which will include English, maths and a range of other subjects - the higher, the better.

The average attainment 8 score was 42.6 in Leicester and 46.1 in Leicestershire, while it was 46.4 for pupils across all state-funded schools in England.

Madani Girls' School, a faith school in Evington, got 59.5 points points per pupil on this measure in the 2018 GCSEs, according to figures released today by the Department for Education - the highest in Leicester and Leicestershire.

It was also the school where pupils made the most progress between Key Stage 2 and Key Stage 4, based on Progress 8 scores.

The school's Progress 8 score was 1.05, which was well above average compared to other schools across England.

Progress 8 is a type of value added measure, which means that pupils’ results are compared to the progress of other pupils nationally with similar prior attainment. In 2018, it has been slightly adjusted to take account of children whose progress is much lower than similar pupils due to factors such as long-term illness.

I take this opportunity to thank our wonderful staff, parents and in particular our year 11 students for the last academic year’s results.

"The Girls' school especially has demonstrated rapid growth, accelerating from 0.11 in 2016 to 1.05 this summer, in the key performance measure. We have conscientiously worked towards ‘diminishing the difference’ and this year’s results show the most disadvantaged students outperformed their peers by an astounding +0.24.

"Here at Madani, we emphasise the importance of world class education and care that enables all learners to reach their personal excellence and to equip them with the skills, identity and values to contribute to society and indeed the world positively."

In 2018, 68% of pupils at the Market Bosworth School got strong passes in the new 1-9 grading system for English and maths, the highest proportion in the area.

A strong pass is a Grade 5 or above - nationally only 43% of pupils managed to achieve these scores in both subjects.

The Market Bosworth School principal Stuart Wilson said “I am incredibly proud of our fantastic staff and students, they worked so hard to achieve these astounding results.

Limehurst Academy School in Loughborough


Limehurst Academy in Loughborough saw the highest percentage of pupils locally achieve the English Baccalaureate, with 54% passing all of the subjects that make up the EBacc with at least a Grade 4 or Grade C.

The EBacc includes qualifications in English language and literature, maths, the sciences, geography or history, and a language.

This year there is a new headline measure for how well a school's pupils are doing in the Ebacc - the average points score.

Pupils at the Market Bosworth School achieved an EBacc average points score of 5.38 in 2018, the highest locally.

The average for all state schools in England was 4.03, and the maximum possible was 10.75, which is possible by achieving an A* in an AS level qualification in each EBacc pillar.

The national GSCE results picture

Across England as a whole, the Henrietta Barnett School in Barnet was the best-performing school at GCSE last year based on the Attainment 8 score, achieving an average of 85.8 points per pupil.

Tauheedul Islam Girls' High School in Blackburn was the school where pupils made the most progress, with the highest Progress 8 score in England at 1.91.

There were 11 schools across England where 100% of pupils achieved at least a Grade 5 in English and maths.

Two schools, the Henrietta Barnett School and the Queen Elizabeth's School, also in Barnet, saw 99% pupils achieve the EBacc with at least a Grade 4 in every subject.

The Henrietta Barnett School had the highest average EBacc average point score in England at 8.55.

Across England, the average Attainment 8 score per pupil for state-funded schools by increased by from 46 in 2017 to 46.4 in 2018.

The maximum Attainment 8 score for a pupil taking only GCSE qualifications was 90 in 2018 (87 in 2017). A pupil who achieved two grade 9s in English and maths and six grade 9s across three EBacc subjects and three other qualifying subjects, would have a point score of 90.

In 2018, an additional 20 reformed GCSEs graded on a 9-1 scale were sat by pupils for the first time, along with the English language, English literature and mathematics GCSEs which were reformed in 2017.

Further reformed GCSEs in other subjects will be phased in over the next 3 years.

The proportion of pupils entering the EBacc increased by 0.3 percentage points since 2017.

In 2018, 38.4% of pupils in state-funded schools entered the EBacc.
