People in the East Midlands are more likely to be smokers than anywhere else in Great Britain, according to a study.

New analysis by Philip Morris Limited (PML) shows that Mansfield in Nottinghamshire has the highest percentage of smokers in the country.

The company ranked all Parliamentary constituencies according to how likely its constituents are to smoke, using the latest statistics released from the Office for National Statistics (ONS).

Just four of the 46 constituencies in the East Midlands are placed in the top 130 seats across Britain, indicating lower levels of smoking.

North West Leicestershire has the highest levels of smoking in the county, ranking 587 out of 632 constituencies.

However, South Leicestershire and Harborough both featured in the top 130 seats across the country, ranking 33 and 6 respectively.

A spokesperson for PML said: "These results show the huge variations in smoking levels across the different parts of Britain.

"We hope MPs in the East Midlands will use the figures to better target help for smokers locally, particularly in seats with the highest smoking prevalence.

"If the Government is to meet its ambitious target, one of the keys to getting smoking prevalence down will be ensuring smokers who don’t quit, understand that alternatives, like e- cigarettes and heated tobacco, are significantly better than continuing to smoke."
