A total of 1,781 people in Leicestershire have tested positive for coronavirus, according to Public Health England figures released today.

Throughout the UK, there are now 215,260 confirmed Covid-19 patients, a rise of 3,896 in 24 hours.

And the nationwide death toll now stands at 31,587, which represents an increase of 346 over the same period.

Of the 1,781 people in Leicestershire who have tested positive, 745 of them are within the Leicester City Council area and the other 1,036 are in the Leicestershire County Council area.

According to the latest figures from Public Health England,

The total of people who had tested positive for Covid-19 and have died at the city’s hospitals stands at 259.

The next steps in the UK's lockdown plan are becoming clearer after the Government indicated it would reopen garden centres, encourage commuters to use bikes and potentially quarantine foreign visitors.

A senior Government source said: "Garden centres are typically open large open-air spaces where the risk of transmission of coronavirus is lower.

"With strict social distancing measures in place we believe they can open safely from next week."
