Winstanley School students celebrate

The Winstanley School say students proved that hard work pays off in the end when they opened their GCSE results yesterday.

Staff say it has been a challenging two years for them, and during this time they have really embraced the school’s values - worked hard, supported each other, never given up and grown into independent young people who they hope will achieve excellence in every step of their future education, training and chosen career paths.

Dave Bennett, Head of School said: “We are very proud of the achievements of our students and the amazing young people they have become in their time here with us. They have taken the opportunities and support offered to them to achieve their personal goals. We wish them every success and hope they continue to shine brightly in whatever they choose to do in the future.”

Outstanding results came from Urvi, one of the school’s Head Girls, who got 9s in Science, Business, Maths, Geography and English Literature, 8s in PE Statistics, English Language an A^ for Further Maths and a Distinction in Hospitality and Catering.

Manor High 'delighted'

Manor High School in Oadby celebrated its 50th anniversary with its first set of full GCSE results since the school changed its age range from 10-14 to 11-16 - saying it was “delighted with students’ performance”.

A fifth of all entries resulted in grades 8 or 9. This is equivalent to or higher than the previous A* grade. A third of all entries resulted in a grade 7 or higher, which is equivalent to an A or higher under the former GCSE grades. 23% of all students achieved a grade 9 in one or more subjects.

In Mathematics, 10% of entries achieved a grade 9. 18% of all History entries resulted in a grade 9. In the Single Sciences, 19% achieved a grade 9 in Biology and also in Chemistry. In Physics, the figure was 24% who achieved a grade 9. Individual successes include a student who achieved eight grade 9s and many others who achieved multiple grade 9s.
A school spokesman said: “Our levels of individual progress are particularly exciting. Many of our students have far exceeded targets which are pitched against the top 5% of students nationally. This means that compared with their starting point on arrival at Manor High School, many of our students have far surpassed national progress at the highest level.”

“As part of our vision to develop students’ strength of mind, we encourage them to be truly independent thinkers and to think ‘big’ ideas, using their creative instincts. We have empowered them to develop resilience through a growth mindset adopting a not yet… rather than a can’t do… attitude to their learning and their personal development.

“We are incredibly proud of our students’ academic achievements this year and of the unstinting commitment of their teachers and support staff. We look forward to the year group’s continued success as they begin their next phase of education in the Sixth Form.”

'Outstanding' pass rate at Loughborough College

Loughborough College says it is today celebrating GCSE success with an ‘outstanding’ pass rate, and high-level grades placing it significantly above the national average.

More students than ever re-sat their English and maths exams at the College, achieving an overall pass rate of 99 per cent, with 338 learners awarded grades in the 9-4 band (equivalent to the former A*-C) in those subjects.

Almost half of students who studied at the Loughborough College campus passed English at the higher grades 9-4, with 34 per cent in maths.

Loughborough College CEO, John Doherty, said: “We are extremely proud of our learners and of our teaching and curriculum services team. Together they have worked incredibly hard to achieve the results we see today – and which are significantly above the average seen across the country.

“Amongst today’s success we have seen the highest possible grade awarded in English, while 83 of our learners are proudly taking home 5-9 grades and 18 performed at a high level by achieving grades 4-9 in both English and maths.

“The College’s excellent GCSE English and maths re-take programme has once again ensured that a significant number of learners have been able to improve their grade with us since leaving school, helping to enhance their opportunities for future progression and employment.”

Single mum to two young boys Nyasha Gumise, 37, passed Maths Higher Paper with a 4, while achieving a Distinction in Applied Sciences.
Nyasha has been studying at Leicester College for four years and has an unconditional offer at De Montfort University for a Nursing degree.

She said: “I’ve been a carer since I was 17, now a senior carer but always wanted to work towards a rewarding career in nursing. Getting this pass in Maths means that I can go further and justifies my decision to return to education.
“I’m really thrilled and thankful to my teacher, who saw the ability in me to do maths, believed in me and helped me.
“It’s been really hard and anxiety levels were high as I was juggling work, childcare and study but it’s been worth it. To others, I’d say go for it and don’t give up!”

Full-time mum with a two year old daughter, Veronika Rahmati, 33, passed GCSE English with an 8.

Veronika said: “I really wasn’t expecting that. I was hoping for a 5 or 6!

“I’m originally from the Czech Republic and studied for a History of Art degree at university there so it’s good to continue my education.
“I could only study when my daughter was sleeping but was prepared for the exam, as I had a good teacher.
“I haven’t decided what to do next, perhaps teaching.
“My advice to others is to spend the time you can on your studies - you may surprise yourself like I did!”

While Charlotte Tribe, 39, mum with three year-old twins, achieved a 7 grade in both Sociology and English.

“I’ve been on the Pre-Access Adult Pathway so these grades will enable me to move on to Access, with the aim of studying midwifery at university.
“Although the other results were good, I didn’t do so well with Maths so will be taking that again while I’m on the Access course.
“I’m a busy mum so my advice to others would be to fit your studying in to a routine and keep to it!”
