Traffic is being stopped on the M1 due to a police incident.

Highways England tweeted: "Traffic will shortly be stopped and held on the M1 southbound just prior to J20 for a police incident.

"Please be patient and we will update as soon as possible."

Traffic has been stopped in both directions.

Police reveal reason for closure

Police have now revealed the details behind the M1 closure.

It followed concerns for the welfare of the driver of a stopped vehicle.

A man has been arrested on suspicion of causing a public nuisance.

Traffic is now moving again in both directions

Leicestershire Police have tweeted the incident is now over.

The latest tweet, at 2.44pm, states: “Incident now finished and traffic running in both directions. There may be slight delay as vehicles get back up to speed.”

Northbound traffic now moving again

Highways England have just tweeted this. Meanwhile, there’s still no word from Leicestershire Police about what is going on.

The traffic is stationary in both directions and queues are building

The police have tweeted about the temporary closure but released no further information about the reasons for it. Leicestershire Live has contacted the police and is awaiting a response.
