A man who stabbed a work colleague to death while they were refurbishing a city house together has today been found guilty of murder.

Sulkahan Singh, a painter and decorator, was working alongside victim Sukhwinder Singh at the property in Penrith Road, Belgrave, when a "relatively minor" argument suddenly "spun out of control".

Sukhwinder was found lying face-down in a pool of blood. He had suffered a stab wound to his heart.

Today at Leicester Crown Court, 39-year-old Singh was found guilty of murdering Sukhwinder, and of one count of 'possessing a bladed article in a public place'.

Leicestershire Police said its officers were called to the scene by paramedics at 9.30am on Tuesday, July 2, to a report that a man had been stabbed.

Sukhwinder, 47, who lived in St Michael’s Avenue, Rushey Mead, Leicester, was taken to Leicester Royal Infirmary where he was pronounced dead.

A murder investigation was launched.

Killer Singh ran away from the house, but others working there told police what he had done. He was arrested two hours later at a property in Norfolk Street, in the city's West End.

Detective Chief Inspector Tony Yarwood, from the East Midlands Special Operations Unit (EMSOU) major crime team, was the senior investigating officer in the case.

He said after the verdict: “This began as a relatively minor argument, but all of a sudden it spun out of control and – tragically – resulted in a man losing his life.

“Unfortunately, Sulkahan Singh wasn’t prepared to accept responsibility, and instead tried to claim someone else must have been responsible for his colleague’s death.

"In interview, he claimed he didn’t kill Sukhwinder even though witness statements said he did.

“My thoughts very much remain with Sukhwinder’s family and friends at this time."

Singh, of Constance Road, North Evington, will be sentenced at the same court on Monday.
