Residents said they feel 'unnerved' after a hammer attack in their street earlier today.

The victim, who is in his 30s, was attacked in Upperton Road, in the city's West End shortly after 10am.

A house at the Narborough Road end of the street was cordoned off and residents reported seeing a police forensics team coming and going from it.

The victim remains in hospital and a man is being questioned by detectives, Leicestershire Police said.

One neighbour said: "Everything the police are doing is inside the house, nothing outside.

"It’s worrying, obviously, that something so nasty and apparently serious has happened so close to my home.

"To my knowledge, we've had stabbings and a shooting in the general Narborough Road area over the past few years.

"But there hasn't been anything quite so close to home. It's unnerving, frankly."

Another resident said he saw a man being brought out of the house in handcuffs and another on a paramedic's trolley.

He said: "I don’t really know who lives there but there are people constantly coming and going from that house all day and all night.

"I didn’t see anything in the street this morning but I did see the police bring someone out of the house in cuffs and a second man being brought out on a trolley."

A Leicestershire Police spokesman said: "At 10.15am we received a report that a man had been assaulted with what was believed to be a hammer in Upperton Road, Leicester.
