A series of overnight closures will come into effect next week as part of ongoing improvement work on a main road in Leicestershire as part of improvements to an M1 junction.

Leicestershire County Council highways say the closures on the A512, by junction 23 for Loughborough, are needed as work starts on a £25m road scheme, which includes improvements at junction 23 of the M1 motorway aimed at "improving overall journey times and road safety in the area".

The work will be carried out by construction company Morgan Sindall and will take place between 8pm to 6am from this Sunday.

It will affect the A512, between junction 23 and Snells Nook Lane, from September 1 to 3.

Restrictions will continue from Wednesday to Thursday on the A512 west of the M1 to Ingleberry Road.

From Monday September 9 to Friday September 20, there will also be localised lane closures during the day around the Ingleberry Road and Leicester Road junctions while new lamp columns are installed.

Diversions will be in place for the duration of these closures.

Councillor Blake Pain, county council cabinet member for environment and transport said: “The night works are necessary to enable extra work to be done to improve the busy junction and ensures that they are carried out in a safe environment.

“As with any major works, we advise motorists to consider alternative routes or give themselves extra time when travelling through the area but carrying the works out at night should ensure disruption is kept to a minimum."

He added: "We are continuing to ensure the impact of the work is minimised and would like to thank motorists, residents and local businesses in advance for their patience.”

The scheme aims to reduce traffic on the A512 and some residential roads and support commercial and residential development in Loughborough, by increasing employment and providing new, more accessible development.

A stretch of the A512 between Junction 23 and Snells Nook Lane, Loughborough, will change from a single to dual carriageway and there will be a new roundabout for two large housing and employment sites.

The scheme is being funded by developers, with an additional £5 million from Highways England and through a £12m allocation from the Local Growth Fund, a pot of government funding awarded to the Leicester and Leicestershire Enterprise Partnership Limited (LLEP) for projects that benefit the local area and economy.
