Sainsbury's has confirmed that one of its Local stores is to close.

The branch is in Gloucester Crescent, on the Fairfield Estate, just outside the centre of South Wigston.

The shop has been there for more than a decade. The premises was previously a Jacksons and a Nisa.

Speaking to LeicestershireLive, a Sainsbury's spokesperson said: "Our Gloucester Crescent store will be closing later this year.

"Customers can continue to shop with us at a number of nearby stores, and colleagues will be offered the opportunity to redeploy."

The store is set to close later this year.

The company did not give an exact date for the closure.

Nor did it give a specific reason why the shop was shutting. The spokesperson said: "We regularly review our estate and this is based on a range of factors."

Fairfield estate resident Jake Croft, 22, said the store was hugely popular, and he was shocked to hear that it was to close.

"I go to the shop twice a week," he said.

"It's easy because I only live down the road, so it's perfect.

"I'm very surprised. I thought it did really well, always people in there!

"I will miss it when it's gone."

It is not yet known what is planned for the building after the closure.
